As inaugurals go, the first long haul revenue flig

As inaugurals go, the first long haul revenue flight of the Airbus 321XLR was not particularly noteworthy, nor did I expect it to be. Iberia set the tone with very little in the way of festivities outside of a gift bag with some free wireless airbuds courtesy Panasonic and a branded remove before flight tag.What make the XLR a game changer is its wide body range in a narrow body platform, not the passenger experience though bypassing hubs certainly improves that. Airline people know the spiel. The evolution is new point to point hub busting network opportunities, market right sizing, added frequency, seasonality to year round, favorable economics, and sustainability. Iberia will eventually discover new markets but is beginning first by adding frequency to Boston, and upgrading a seasonal to year round service to Washington D.C beginning in January.Sure I could’ve tried one of those lovely 14 lie-flat premium seats up front with a delicious Do & Co three course meal. But what would that prove? Of course, that’s going to be nice. The Back of the Bus in economy is the true acid test so off to seat 24D I trodded - with a tad of trepidation.So, was narrow body long haul in economy over the North Atlantic on the A321XLR a medieval form of purgatory or actually better than expected? There were some surprises to the upside and a few snafus with a flight that bedeviled and did delight.. particularly the A+++ crew and catering!Look for my verdict in a full Nose to Tail trip report coming shortly to RunwayGirlNetwork.com. I survived a Ryanair flight from BRU-MAD and hones

I survived a Ryanair flight from BRU-MAD and honestly, it was not bad at all. Europe’s largest airline and the true ULCC unbundled pioneer felt like the old Spirit with quirky differences. The boarding from the tarmac with stairs was a retro throwback, the pre-ordering of hot food on an app was unexpected, the legroom of extra cost seat 1A at door 1L was the size of a football field, the cheeky safety cards and ads festooned on seats and overhead bins was novel, ala carte unbundled ULCC approach worked perfect for me, and the flight was on time. Easy Peezy. Only quibble was the “service with a scowl” attitude from the cabin crew. I should suggest to CEO Michael O’Leary that he should parody British Airways’ “To Fly To Serve” slogan with “To Fly To Scorn”. ...#AvGeek #PaxEx #Airlines #Aircraft #AirlineInteriors #Aviation

Tomorrow I am flying the inaugural long-haul fligh

Tomorrow I am flying the inaugural long-haul flight of the game changing Airbus A321XLR, but this morning was the dedication and press preview at Iberia’s maintenance base in Madrid. Iberia will take the honors as the world’s first operator of the aircraft which allows up to 4,700nmi of range bringing long haul flying to a new generation narrow body aircraft (replacing 757 in the role). With nearly 500 orders so far, this plane is already a hit with numerous strategies in its arsenal: hub overflying, point to point route new long/thin route capabilities, frequency adding, and year round routes on formerly seasonal routes. Tomorrow, Iberia begins the first example with Boston-Madrid replacing an A330 to operate more frequency followed by formerly seasonal Madrid-Washington DC which goes year-round beginning in January. This is made possible by an innovative rear center fuel tank which doubles the range of the original A321. The CFM Leap engines are 50% quieter, 30% more fuel efficient, and greatly reduced emissions than the aircraft it replaces. Iberia’s Airspace II cabin features 14 seats / lie-flat bed suites in business class and 168 economy seats with USB and power, seat back TV’s, extra large bins, WiFi, and lower cabin altitude at each seat.
